Solid engine mounts

If you want to replace the old XS1100 rubber engine mounts with solid ones, you can now do so.

This will stiffen up the frame and may help the bike's handling.

If you want to make your own, the dimensions are here.

Yamaha manufacture solid mounts for the Vmax and these can be used with a slight modification.

  Name Yamaha Part number Quantity
  Vmax front engine mount 4XY 15541-00-00 4
  Vmax rear engine mount 4XY 15542-00-00 2

However, Pegasus Engineering also make the Vmax mounts for £30 and these are the ones that I used.  Since talking to them, they are willing to take the 3mm of the 2 front mounts and the price will be about the same.

The 2 front lower mounts have to be modified, so you'll need to remove 3mm from the inside edge of the wide end of the mount as shown in red below.  It's best to do this on a lathe but if you're accurate it can be done with a hacksaw - it's only alloy.

Then you'll need to hacksaw the spacers flush, you're only wanting to remove the thin collar part.

To assemble it all, follow the instructions in the XS1100 manual bearing in mind that:

  • The mount holes will need cleaning out.

  • Lightly grease the solid mounts.

  • Tap the mounts into the holes with a rubber mallet.

It is worth noting that replacing the rubber mounts with solid ones may also increase vibration felt at the handlebars

however this can be kept to a minimum by using bar-end weights and foam grips.
